Tanzania

Tanzania is a peaceful democracy, located in East Africa, south of Kenya. Population ≈ 37 millions, surface ≈1 million km2. It is a multi-ethnic (some 120 tribes), multi-religion, tolerant country. More about Tanzania can be found e.g. on www.tanzania.go.tz

Arusha

Arusha, (≈200’000 inhabitants) is located about 1,500 meters above sea level on the northern highlands of Tanzania. It is situated beneath Mt. Meru (4'600 m) and the Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa (6'100 m).
Arusha is the seat of the revived East Africa Community.The languages spoken in the region are Kiswahili and English. The Masaai tribe inhabits the region. Arusha is also the home of the famous Tanzanite gemstones.

Arusha is the base for visits of the large National Parks (safari): Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and others. Zanzibar, a beautiful, exotic island is easily accessible from Arusha by ample inexpensive internal flights .

HEALTH and SAFETY

 

Tanzanians are peaceful and tolerant. The crime rate in Arusha is very low.
However, as in every tourist center, one must be aware of pick-pockets.

It is recommended to take anti-malaria pills and not to drink tap water. For additional needed health precautions and vaccinations, please consult with the health authorities of your home-country.
As an example we give here the Swiss recommendations for necessary vaccinations for a short stay in Tanzania: Vaccination against Yellow Fever is obligatory.
Vaccination against Hepatitis, Tetanus, Polio, Diphtheria are strongly recommended. Anti Maleria pills are very strongly recommended.

 

 

CLIMATE

Arusha is located on a high plateau with moderate climate and green surroundings. Early August (early Spring) is typically pleasant, dry, and sunny (typically ≈22oC daytime, and ≈15oC at night). In Zanzibar the air temperature is ≈29oC and sea ≈25oC
